In this study we combined aerosol particle measurements at the surface with a scanning Doppler lidar providing vertical profiles of the atmosphere to study the effect of different boundary layer conditions on aerosol particle properties in the understudied Arabian Peninsula region. The instrumentation used in this study enabled us to identify periods when pollution from remote sources was mixed down to the surface and initiated new particle formation in the growing boundary layer.

We investigate the pollen distribution at different heights using measurements from ground level up to 272 meters in eastern Finland. By combining optical pollen sensors with traditional monitoring methods and atmospheric model predictions, we examined how pollen concentrations vary with height. The results show that pollen concentrations decrease with altitude and that optical sensors combined with machine learning can identify dominant pollen types for continuous pollen monitoring.

We evaluated a traceable calibration method for aerosol absorption instruments based on monodisperse nigrosin particles. The absorption coefficient calculated using Mie theory was compared with measurements using the Photo-Thermal Aerosol Absorption Monitor, traceably calibrated with NO2. Particle classification using setups with the differential mobility analyzer, the centrifugal particle mass analyzer and a tandem of both in series were tested.

We present a new method for obtaining the function which describes how the Doppler lidar telescope configuration impacts the measurements. The advantage of the new method is that it can be used without an external reference. We then evaluate the new method with the existing method which does use an external reference and show that the results for the new method are in good agreement.

This study explores how smoke and volcanic ash particles, alter the way light is scattered in the atmosphere. By using a ground‑based HALO Doppler lidar system, we observed clear differences in the depolarization ratio, a shape-relevant optical parameter, between fresh smoke, aged smoke, and volcanic ash. These findings show that HALO Doppler lidars can help identify particle types in the air and even provide estimates of smoke mass concentrations, improving assessments of air quality.

Vertical profiles and time series of aerosol particles, cloud droplets, and weather conditions were measured by the Finnish Meteorological Institute airborne payload attached to tethered balloons during the Pallas Cloud Experiment 2022 in Finland. When combined with other datasets collected during the campaign, these measurements will enable integrated analyses and offer a comprehensive view of the atmospheric conditions during the experiment.

The Arctic climate is affected detrimentally by black carbon (BC). Our unique long-term observational results imply that Arctic BC size distributions do not wary substantially in space nor time although the mass concentration of BC can vary by orders of magnitude. Our findings suggest that, when modeling the climate impacts of BC in the Arctic, it is realistic to consider a BC size distribution with low variability.

We trained machine learning models to estimate the number of aerosol particles large enough to form clouds and generated daily estimates for the entire globe. The models performed well in many continental regions but struggled in remote and marine areas. We studied particles in the air over 1 year in the Finnish sub-Arctic to understand how biological particles affect ice formation in clouds. We found that fungal spores are the main contributors to ice formation at warmer temperatures. These particles are released locally and vary with the weather. Our results also show that we know very little about which fungi can form ice in the atmosphere, highlighting a major gap in our understanding of how nature influences weather and climate.

We study how environmental variables influencing natural methane fluxes explain the seasonal variability in satellite-observed methane in Northern Hemisphere high-latitude wetland areas. Using two atmospheric model set-ups, we assess consistency with satellite data. Methane loss through reaction with hydroxyl radicals and links with snow cover, temperature, and snowmelt had the strongest influence. Our study highlights the value of satellite observations for understanding large-scale wetland emissions.

We find that small particles suspended in the air (aerosols) affect the satellite observations of carbon dioxide (CO2) made by the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 satellite instrument. Satellite estimates of CO2 appear to be too high for clean areas and too low for polluted areas. Our results show that CO2 and aerosols are often co-emitted, and this is partly masked out in the current retrievals. Correctly accounting for the aerosol effect is important for CO2 emission estimates by satellites.

Every year a vast number of people experience allergic reactions due to exposure to airborne pollen. These symptoms are concentration dependent; thus accurate information about the pollen load in the atmosphere is essential. Moreover, pollen grains and fragments of it are likely to contribute to cloud processes and suppress precipitation. Here, we estimate the concentration and cloud-relevant parameters of birch pollen in the atmosphere using observations from a PollyXT and a CL61 ceilometer.

The value of numerical weather predictions can be enhanced in several ways, one is to improve the representations of small-scale processes in models. To understand what needs to be improved, the model results need to be evaluated. Following standardized principles, a file format has been defined to be as similar as possible for both observational and model data. Python packages and toolkits are presented as a community resource in the production of the files and evaluation analysis.

In June 2019, smoke particles from a Canadian wildfire event were transported to Europe. The long-range-transported smoke plumes were monitored with a spaceborne lidar and reanalysis models. Based on the aerosol mass concentrations estimated from the observations, the reanalysis models had difficulties in reproducing the amount and location of the smoke aerosols during the transport event. Clouds are important for the climate, and cloud droplets have a significant role in cloud properties. Cloud droplets form when air rises and cools and water vapour condenses on small particles that can be natural or of anthropogenic origin. Currently, the updraft velocity, meaning how fast the air rises, is poorly represented in global climate models. In our study, we show three methods that will improve the depiction of updraft velocity and which properties are vital to updrafts.

Mineral dust or similar ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are needed to initiate cloud droplet freezing at temperatures common in shallow clouds. In this work we examine how INPs that are released from the sea surface impact marine clouds. Our high-resolution simulations show that turbulent updraughts carry these particles effectively up to the clouds, where they initiate cloud droplet freezing. Sea surface INP emissions become more important with decreasing background dust INP concentrations.

Overall, this paper shows that strong temperature inversions prevent BC heating within the PBL from significantly increasing PBL height, while BC above the PBL suppresses PBL development significantly through the day. From this we suggest a method by which both locally and regionally emitted BC may impact urban pollution episodes.

We proposed a method to derive a convective boundary layer height, using insects in radar observations, and we investigated the consistency of these retrievals among different radar frequencies (5, 35 and 94 GHz). This method can be applied to radars at other measurement stations and serve as additional way to estimate the boundary layer height during summer. Absorbing aerosols are warming the planet and accurate measurements of their concentrations in pristine environments are needed. We applied eight different absorbing-aerosol measurement methods in a field campaign at the Arctic Pallas station. The filter-based techniques were found to be the most sensitive to detect the minuscule amounts of black carbon present, showing a 40 % agreement between them. Our results help to reduce uncertainties in absorbing aerosol measurements.
