Short summary
Air samples were collected using two types of passive samplers at five sampling sites in the Athabasca oil sands region, Alberta, Canada. A comparison of chemicals demonstrated that the sampler with a more open design captured more particle-associated chemicals. The spatial distribution of chemicals showed that the concentrations were highest at a site that is close to surface mining and upgrading facilities. Oil sands ore is likely to be a major contributor to the volatile chemicals in air.
