Short summary
Ceilometers can track dust and pollution particles in the atmosphere, but their measurements need validation. This study statistically compared two processing methods against thousands of measurements from sun-tracking instruments and balloon soundings at three European sites over two years. One method, using an independent calibration procedure, proved more accurate across all conditions, cutting uncertainties by around half. This supports its wider use for air quality monitoring.
