Short summary
Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons (VCHCs) influence the ozone layer and climate, yet the Western Pacific's role in their budget was unclear. This study showed that ocean ventilation and terrestrial inputs jointly controlled VCHCs levels in the Western Pacific, with the region acting as a source for some VCHCs but a sink for carbon tetrachloride. These findings highlighted the ocean's regulatory role and provided essential data to refine global VCHCs' budget estimates.
