Short summary
We introduce a new thermodynamic framework to derive water vapor supersaturation at warm cumulus cloud base from in situ measurements. The framework describes the local transition between saturated thermodynamic states as an adiabatic and reversible process under quasi-isobaric conditions, in which the latent energy released during condensation is partitioned between changes in internal energy and water-vapor expansion work.
