Short summary
We developed a method to estimate carbon dioxide emissions across Europe using satellite measurements of nitrogen dioxide, which is released alongside fuel combustion. By applying sector-specific ratios, we convert nitrogen dioxide observations into carbon dioxide estimates, revealing stronger seasonal patterns with higher total emissions across Europe, especially in winter. This approach provides more accurate information to monitor human-caused emissions and support climate action.
