Short summary
Some man-made gases emitted into the atmosphere can break down to form a powerful greenhouse gas called HFC-23 (hydrofluorocarbons). In this study, we use a full three-dimensional model of the atmosphere and its chemistry to improve on previous work and determine how much HFC-23 is produced from this route. Our model estimates HFC-23 production ten times lower than previously suggested, confirming that this source is a very small contributor to the total amount of HFC-23 in the atmosphere.
