Short summary
This study highlights the efficiency of supercooled liquid-dominated stratus clouds to remove ice-nucleating particles (INPs). When within the planetary boundary layer (PBL), lower concentrations of INPs were measured under supercooled stratus conditions, compared to when the stratus cloud layers occurred at temperatures above freezing. Under supercooling conditions, the free-troposphere above the supercooled stratus covered PBL was found to be an additional potential source of INP.
