Short summary
EarthCARE is equipped with a new spaceborne Doppler radar that can observe cloud vertical motions. Using 16 months of observations, we found clear differences between storm regions in upward air motion, cloud particles, and how fast particles fall. A single-case model comparison also showed that cloud-process settings can affect simulated storm structure. These results show how EarthCARE can help improve the representation of tropical cyclones in weather and climate models.
