Short summary
EarthCARE is the first space mission with the capability to measure vertical motion inside clouds. This work assesses the utility of EarthCARE observations for studying the vertical motion of air in tropical anvil clouds. The findings are encouraging in that EarthCARE not only provides robust estimates of vertical air motion but has the potential to quantify the horizontal motion as well. This will be useful for better understanding how anvil clouds are formed and sustained over time.
