Ice formation by particles is an important way of making mixed-phase and ice clouds. We found that particles collected in the marine atmosphere exhibit diverse ice nucleation abilities and mixing states. Sea salt mixed-sulfate particles were enriched in ice-nucleating particles. Selective aging on sea salt particles made particle populations more externally mixed. Characterizations of particles and their mixing state are needed for a better understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions.

Organosulfates are important components of fine particles, but their formation in mountain regions remains poorly constrained. Seasonal samples from Wuyi Mountain were analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. Summer formation was closely linked to acidic, sulfate-rich particles, while winter formation was more influenced by atmospheric oxidation, nitrogen chemistry, and anthropogenic precursors. The results show that seasonal changes reflect both local chemistry and regional transport.

Chamber simulations were conducted to investigate formation of highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOM) from OH-initiated α-pinene oxidation under varying NO levels, with emphasis on the hydrogen-abstraction pathway. Without NO, C10H17Oₓ· species dominated. With NO, C10H15Oₓ· products became more abundant, accounting for ~34 % at high NO levels. Clustering results and comparison with α-pinene and pinonaldehyde systems show that hydrogen-abstraction is likely the source of C10H15Oₓ·-related HOM.

The wind speed needed to lift dust from surfaces governs the highest uncertainty in emission models, making it the root cause of dust forecasting errors. We developed iDust-ut, a global threshold dataset by fusing ground observations, satellite data, and reanalysis products. Tests with the iDust model show doubled severe dust storm prediction accuracy. The dataset works directly in any model with built-in adaptation for wind biases, substantially improving operational dust forecasting worldwide.

Cloud substantially changes the compositions organic aerosol. How cloud processing of organics occur on molecular level remains unclear. We found that compared with cloud free particles, organics in cloud contains more large molecules likely due to accretion reactions and has more nitrogen-containing compounds. We identify some new compounds formed in cloud. Such modifications of the organics in cloud can further change its physicochemical properties, and impact on climate and human health.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) can act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and influence global cloud formation. This study modeled CCN and chemical composition, aerosol size and hygroscopicity (κ) of SOA using a model treating every single step. We evaluated the model ability and limitations in simulated chemical composition, κ, particle size distribution and CCN as a potential benchmark model and found that the accurate simulation of SOA size and κ is essential for reliable CCN prediction.

Understanding how ice forms in clouds is crucial for predicting weather and climate; however, accurately measuring the ice-nucleating particles that trigger ice formation remains challenging. We developed an advanced instrument called the Freezing Ice Nucleation Detection Analyzer. By refining temperature control, automating freezing detection, and rigorously testing, we demonstrated that this instrument can reliably measure immersion mode ice-nucleating particles across diverse conditions.

Oxidation of limonene, an element emitted by trees and chemical products, by OH, a daytime oxidant, forms many highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs), including C10-20 compounds. HOMs play an important role in new particle formation and growth. HOM formation can be explained by the chemistry of peroxy radicals. We found that a minor branching ratio initial pathway plays an unexpected, significant role. Considering this pathway enables accurate simulations of HOMs and other concentrations.

The oxidation of limonene, a common volatile emitted by trees and chemical products, by NO3, a nighttime oxidant, forms many highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOM), including C10-30 compounds. Most of the HOM are second-generation organic nitrates, in which carbonyl-substituted C10 nitrates accounted for a major fraction. Their formation can be explained by chemistry of peroxy radicals. HOM, especially low-volatile ones, play an important role in nighttime new particle formation and growth.

Short summary
Ice formation by dust is an important way of forming mixed-phase clouds. Tengger desert dust exhibited an efficient ice nucleation ability, which have influenced by feldspar. Internal mixing with ammonium sulfate significantly enhanced immersion freezing ability of dust, associating with interactions between ammonium ion and dust surface. These results underscore the importance of mineral composition and aging processes on atmospheric ice formation by dust.
