Short summary
Aromatics compounds emitted in the atmosphere, such as benzene and phenol, contribute to the formation of organic aerosols. This study presents and evaluates an updated description of benzene chemistry, in which the most influential pathways are identified, including one developed in this work. The resulting mechanism reproduces laboratory observation with great accuracy and is reduced for use in large-scale air quality models.
