Short summary
Fine atmospheric aerosol particles collected at urban and rural sites in Japan exhibited clear differences in oxidative potential. Urban-collected particles had higher oxidative potential, whereas rural-collected particles, influenced by aerosols transported from continental Asia, showed lower oxidative potential, suggesting that the oxidative toxicity of fine particles decreases during atmospheric transport, probably because of secondary particle formation.
