Comments on ‘Temporal Variations in Rainwater Methanol’ by Felix et al.

This paper is a study of the methanol concentrations in precipitation during 49 rain events that occurred in North Carolina, U.S.A. over a one-year period. The authors have provided statistics for these concentrations and the thorough discussion of the implications of these results. This study is important as there are currently few such measurements available in the literature; and, as noted by the authors, rain water concentrations are valuable for constraining the magnitude of transport or removal processes of methanol in the environment.

The authors have satisfactorily addressed the issues raised by the previous reviewers of this paper. Their acceptance of most of the comments of the reviewers in the current paper has greatly improved its focus, clarity and readability. In its current form, I consider the paper to be acceptable for publication in ACP (after attention to the minor comments below).

I note below several technical issues that should be addressed before publication:

1. I suggest the use of ‘gas-phase’ rather than ‘gas phase’, but both are used at various places in the paper. There is a need to be consistent.

2. The term ‘200X’ is used in several places in the paper, whereas ‘30 times’ is used on page 16, line 6. For consistency, it would be better to use ‘times’ in both contexts.

3. page 11, lines 8-9 and lines 21-23: References have been included twice.

4. page 13, line 11: Change ‘Hue’ to ‘Hu’

5. page 14, line 13: Change ‘Figure 6’ to ‘Figure 5’

6. page 14, line 22: Change ‘Figures 5’ to ‘Figure 4’ (I think)

7. page 14, line 23: Change ‘mechanisms’ to ‘mechanism’

8. page 16, line 5: remove the apostrophe on ‘months’

References:

Be sure that the format of citations is consistent with the requirements of the journal. There are currently a number of punctuation errors and occasional use of lower case letters for the names of journals. In particular, on page 19, line 8: include a comma after 3594. On page 20, line 27, include the journal name. On page 20, line 36, replace 2000 by 2000b.

The citations for Kerminen et al. 2004, and Van Loon and Allen 2008 are not referenced in the text of the paper. If not needed, they should be deleted from the References.

The citations for Millet 2005, Karl 2003, Niinemets 2003 and Tie 2003 in your References show only the name of the lead author. I believe that all of these references have multiple authors. Also, where these papers are referenced in the paper, the lead author’s name should be followed by et al.
